About Me

There are very few sidewalks where my dog and I walk, also the roads are narrow. I have my dog sit when a vehicle approaches regardless which side of the road the vehicle is on.

The Conservation District does not operate a dog-off-leash area; and thus pets are not allowed to be released off leash to run or remain at large. Our friends at Dogo are like the Jedi Masters of dog training. Check out their programs to teach your dog literally 100+ tricks. And potentially start a fight between the dogs you walk and other dogs. I like to vary our route so my dog is mentally challenged every day with new experiences. As I mention in the article back clip harnesses promote pulling, but front clip harnesses do not. If you don’t have sidewalks in your neighborhood make sure you give drivers the ability to see you from a distance.

It's not disgusting once in the bag and is simply kind to your community. Going for walks should be fun and stimulating for your dog. It's also important to exhibit proper etiquette when out in public and on the leash. Many people don’t realize that puppies can’t be walked very far, no matter the breed. Twenty minutes is the maximum they should be out for at first. You can gradually build up to longer walks as your pup gets older and more mature.

When you suggested getting a waste bag, it convinced me to buy a large mesh bag for my Rottweiler. That way, we can both get exercise and avoid polluting in and around our streets at the same time. My favorite way is using a front-clip harness, and putting on a waist belt , and clipping the leash to that. I like to bring an old towel washed in unscented detergent along on our puppy walks. I attach it to a piece of lightweight rope and drag it along the ground as we walk! It works wonders when we take our dog to the vet or a new place that might make them nervous.

You can buy poop bags in any pet store, and they’re really easy to carry. In the United States, the first professional dog walker is believed to have been Jim Buck, who in 1960 launched his dog walking service in New York City.

There are three items that you should never leave home without. Not only is it common courtesy, but if you don’t, you could be faced with a hefty fine. Even when the weather isn’t warm, your dog can get dehydrated quickly. Finally, a toy that you can throw for them means that they’ll be able to run around for a bit and enjoy themself. I live is the Sonoran Desert and our roads are chip sealed. There are weeds and high grass on each side of the one lane road I walk with my 6 month old Boarder Collie.

From durable webbing patterns inspired by our favorite wild places to Ruffwear-designed hardware, these dog leashes are designed to enhance and celebrate the journeys we take with our pups. A dog leash should be six feet long in most instances, although you may want a shorter or longer leash for different circumstances. If you live in the city, a shorter leash may be a better choice, just be sure not to get one that is too short and restrictive for your pup. People who live in the country or those who are training may prefer a longer leash.

This leash clips onto your dog’s collar on one end and operates like a measuring tape. A nylon band of cord measuring up to 26 feet extends and recoils inside the broad handle. Most retractable leashes have a locking mechanism so you can maintain a certain length. This very versatile leash has six different ways to use it, depending on where you hook the carabiner.

Askeland likes that it’s made from strong materials and has a comfortable handle, while Fraser loves the extra security of the locking, carabiner-style clasp.

The elasticity protects you and your dog from strain caused by strong and abrupt pulls. Most dog owners purchase adjustable leashes as a training tool that can expand in length as your dog improves. Adjustable leashes are often preferred by runners, as you can tether your dog to your waist and run hands-free. Leather leashes tend to be the most durable and perhaps the most stylish.

Sometimes they can take some time to break in and feel comfortable. The type of leash you choose should depend on your dog’s size, says Marissa Sunny, a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and senior dog lifesaving specialist for the Best Friends Animal Society.

There are certain standard leashes available that are made with either cotton or rubber. However, keep in mind that these materials lack durability and are not chew proof. Intended for everyday use and basic training exercises, these leashes have a looped end for your hand to grip and a clasp on the opposite end that attaches to the collar.
